Why does bread have to be closed in order to GROW MOULD?

I'm doing a lab where we put bread into a container that is wet and in a dark area. Why do we need to close the container, though? Does the mould grow easier that way?

If you have any questions, I'll edit my post with the answers.

  1. A closed container will keep the moisture. But a closed container also keeps fungal spores in the air from setting down on the bread.
