I mean realistically, what are the chances of anything happening? has anyone heard of computers being frazzled because of a storm?

  1. I've had a modem blow up whilst connected during a storm. But no damage to my computer. Not worth the risk though.

  2. I replace storm damaged computers all the time. Turning them off doesn't help. You have to unplug the power cords and any other connections to the outside world.

A UPS will keep most all lightning from coming down the power line, but DSL and cable lines are hit by lightning too.

  3. Well, one evening when the skies darkened and a rumble of thunder could be heard in the distance, my son decided to go on line and check Doppler radar to see where the storm was (mind you, he just saw a flash of lightening over the ridge) but while he was on the computer lightening zapped the phone line (we had dial up at the time) and a great POP! and flash of light flashed under the desk at his feet where the phone cord connected into the safety switch.  It melted the safety switch, scared the bjesus out of my son and made the dog run for cover.

We have cable now - I don't know if there would be any problem with that.  Power surges during a storm could harm a computer if they are plugged in.  I do however feel safe in using the wireless laptop (battery powered) - to check dopplar radar.

  4. It is rare, but it has occurred.  That is the reason for the recommendation.  Also, power bumps from lightning striking power lines can cause file glitches (corruption) in some cases.  Yes, the overall risk is low, but you still need to be aware of those possibilities.  One recommendation I would make is to plug your computer into a surge protector.  It is an inexpensive way to protect your system.

  5. It is the lightning causing power surges that does the damage.
