i agree with g9061.When Count Olaf mentions that he will do this the last time, it hint to a previous love affair, maybe when he was once good and was working with her at VFD.maybe so.but as lemony snicket says, many things were a mystery that you can't answer.but i think you might get a hint why from one of these books:
