Yeah, when I eat curry or any spicy food, I feel like I need to blow my nose and my eyes sometimes water a bit. Why is that? the chilli or whatever is in my mouth, not my nose, so why are they affected?

Explain how it all works to me. : )

  1. I suppose it's not like you're closing your eyes and holding your breath when you're eating. And sense of smell and taste are linked. So just because you're eating it doesn't mean that your other senses aren't affected. Couldn't explain to you why you'd tear up though.

  2. Eating curry and spicy food is a sure way to get a runny nose. This is because these foods contain ingredients such as jalapenos, chilies and peppers. Capsaican is a chemical in these items that irritates the body’s membranes into overproducing mucous - so resulting in a runny nose.

    It's known as gustatory rhinorrhoea.
