  1. The dew point is the air temperature when water vapor is forced out of the air as water droplets. These then fall to the grass. This happens at different temperatures depending on how wet the air is ie the amount of water vapor in the air, the humidity.

A low dew point temperature means the air is drier. Phoenix Arizona can be 68 F with a -40 F dew point. Because there is almost no humidity in Arizona the temeprature would have to drop to -40 F before what little water vapor existed could be forced to condense out to water drops. Meanwhile in the Midwest with its high summer humidity the dew point ranges from 60-70 F. So when the temperature drops at night to 60 the dew falls out.

The wetter the air the higher the dew point.

  2. dew is deposit of waterdrops formed at night by the condensation of water vapour from the air onto the surfaces of objects freely exposed to the sky . It forms on clear nights when the air is calm or, preferably, when the wind is light.

edit - the question was about dew not dew point. ( 2 different explanations ). i have answered the question as 'dew'.

When air close to the ground cools at night through a loss of radiation the temperature often falls below the dew point temperature and dew may form
