Question:

Why does dialing "1" before a local call become a problem?

Most of my phone calls are long distance, so I automatically dial "1" before the area code, etc. When I call a certain local number (still using the area code, 1-x*x-x*x-xxxx) a voice message tells me that I do not need to dial one to reach that number, and to hang up and try again. Why don't they just connect me?

  1. 1 is the country code for USA/Canada calls.  So dialing 1 implies you are attempting an international call.

  2. I'm not sure, but think it has something to do with them charging for the long distance phone calls, it's how they know! Everything is automated or computerized and it's not in the program to let it connect you when you dial a "1" before the number.

  3. because its becomes a 11-digit phone number..and the phone does not recongnize it..
