  1. Nobody knows, but it seems they like to keep their distance from mice.  I don't know whether they think the mouse might get on them, or they just don't want to step on the little animal.

An observed incident of elephants backing off when they confront a mouse likely led to the belief that they are afraid.  An experiment by the TV show Myth-busters with mice and wild elephants showed that it was not fear but avoidance at stepping on that gives the impression of fear.  Apparently people never gave a thought to one animal caring enough about another animal not to step upon it.  We should take a lesson from the elephants.  I don't like the idea that elephants are more caring than humans about other species of life.
