  1. Because not only the Spaniard settled in South America, Holland, France, Portugal, England and so were countries that invaded and settled in South America and the Caribbean. You know its a big continent with different histories and rich cultures.

  2. Because all those lands belonged to Spain except Brazil, Guyana and some others...that is why most of latin americans speak spanish..Brazil belonged to Portugal and Guyana to France..

    Colombia is passion

  3. They were settled by Europeans. They have different histories even though they are in South America.

  4. Spain conquered first and got hold of more land.

Guyana used to belong to Venezuela but the English took it because it was on the other side of the Essequibo river where there where hardly any settlements.

  5. why does every country in north america speak english exept for mexico?

  6. In short, no. All countries in south ameica do speak spanish except for Brazil = portuguese, Guyana = english, Suriname = dutch, French Guiana = french.

  7. When spanish conquerors and portuguese conquerors came to South America, they were fighting as for terrority for their kings. So there was an imaginary line drawn by them (Treaty of Tordecillas) and everything on the left was for Spain and everything on the right was for Portugal. This line crossed the amazon jungle and therefore the only territory the portuguese got was what now is Brazil. Guyana, French Guyana and Surinam were in the middle of the jungle so neither got it and years after there were dutch settlers going into Surinam and claiming it for the Dutch king, French Guyanan went to the french and Guayana went to the british empire. That's why every country except Brazil and those 3 speak spanish. It all went for Spain and its king.

  8. Because they were colonized by different countries, who left their mark on the countries.  Brazil by the Portuguese, Belize by the English, Argentina by the Italians.  Suriname by the Dutch, and French Guyana by the French.  When the world was being divided up, a pope decided that Spain would get half of the world, while Portugal would get the other half.  The Treaty of Tordesillas, that left most of Latin America for Spain, with the exception of Brazil, and the rest of the world for Portugal.  The other countries who were also in the Americas just didn't listen to the pope.
