Question:

Why does every place ask for your SS# as an "ID"?

I'm just frustrated because every place seems to rely upon your SS# for an "ID" number, i.e. dentist office, doctor's offices, online affiliate programs, etc. I would think that with all the ID theft, they would prefer to create a unique ID system that wouldn't potentially hold them at a legal risk should their systems or an employee give others access to these numbers (even ebay and government offices have fallen victim to hackers getting ahold of this information). I don't feel comfortable giving my SS# out to everyone, and have often gotten into heated discussions when I refuse to do so. I feel that only my direct employer and the IRS should have access to this.

  1. Although I agree with you, the SSN really IS a "unique ID system." No one else has the same number as you do, therefore it's unique. It is a bit strange that although the SSN is mainly used for taxation purposes it is also used for doing the simplest things, like getting a dentist's appointment.

I guess all you can do is suck it up and check your finances thoroughly to avoid ID theft.

  2. because you are the only person with that number!  No one else in the world has YOUR   SS#.   Does that help?
