Why does everyone keep thinking that Hurricane Gustav will hit New Orleans, LA?

Hurricane Gustav will hit west of New Orleans, LA.

the problem with it hitting  to new orleans west is that  the worst part of the storm is the center and the northeast quadrant. unlike katrina in which it passed new orleanes to its east, gustav may have more of an impact.

right now its a bit weak winds of 120 mph, but it cold strengthen to about 130 moh before impacting land.  

no matter where you are on this storm watch out for very heavy rain lots of flooding, and toward the center of the storm leves can break and houses demolished. stay prepared and leave if nessesary.

yes you could be a good weather girl especially if you stick to the weather and listen to what damage this storm does.

Either way it will get affected by it with some Category 1 or 2 conditions likely!!!

no one is saying that it will hit neworleans. the storm surge from the hurricane WILL most likely end up flooding a good part of new orleans if it goes back to a cat. 4.  and im not worried about it hitting new orleans, but i am worried it will get closer.   east side is the strong side.  if this storm moves east even 30 miles at landfall it will be terrible.

That's simply because New Orleans is the closest major city, and of course we all remember Katrina, so that focuses things on New Orleans as well.  The center of Gustav still appears that it will pass west of New Orleans, but still close enough that New Orleans will get strong winds and heavy rains.  The track of Gustav is also such that the higher storm surge waters that exist on the right front quadrant of the storm, to the right of the center, could be pushed into Lake Pontchartrain, possible testing the levees.
