Why does everyone seem to think that Margarito will kill De La Hoya?

Don't get me wrong, Tony is an outstanding fighter and his win over Cotto was very impressive, but I think people may underestimating Oscar in a matchup between the two. Oscar is bigger, faster, has better boxing skills, and has a good chin also. Tony won't have the physical advantages over Oscar that he enjoyed over Cotto, and Oscar can bang and brawl when he needs to. I just don't see this as the blowout for Tony that most people seem to think it will be if they ever do fight.

Gentlemen, your thoughts?

  1. The main reason Pancho is that Oscar is a good 10 to 12 years past his prime and Cotto is still considered in his prime. Oscar and Miguel are both converted Southpaws, with this being a major factor in both fighters arsenal Miguel does seem to have the edge in power. I am of the opinion that Cottos loss to Margarito is one that ends careers early ala Meldrick Taylor versus Julio Cesar Chavez.

  2. No idea, Oscar is the man, Margarito is a true champ but I think Oscar would just have it over him

  3. Oscar's toughness has always been overlooked. I think it would be a great fight to tell you the truth. Margarito would probably pul it out due to the fact that Oscar has too much going on outside of boxing to train properly. It wouldn't be a cakewalk by any means though. I think Oscar hits harder than Cotto.

  4. Oscar in his prime would stand an excellent chance of defeating Margarito. The current Oscar is too old,too slow, doesn't have the stamina to withstand 12 rounds of relentless pressure of a Margarito.

Lets face it,Oscar is now a better promoter than he is a fighter

  5. I understand what your thinking, and I think De La Hoya has a chance.

The problem is, it's only a chance.  De La Hoya will be the underdog for this fight and I'll tell you why.  Your right that, compared to Cotto, Oscar is bigger, faster, has better boxing skills, and a good chin, however, Oscar's not the same as he used to be.

Cotto is stronger, and believe it or not, has great boxing skills as you can see him outbox Mosley in their final rounds.  He is also younger, and more in shape, which gives him an edge in stamina.

Yet Margarito was able to break Cotto down.

Oscar's only chance would be to outbox Margarito the whole fight, and even though he may be able to pull it off..  he would not want to close out a career looking like he did against Trinidad.

Although Oscar's stamina looked pretty good against Forbes, Margarito's punches will wear Oscar down.  By the time he gets to the later rounds, Oscar's stamina will be down and if Margarito does not end up knocking Oscar out, he will be putting tremendous pressure allowing him to score points, or a possible TKO.

I agree with you that Margarito won't "kill" De La Hoya in a blowout.  But Margarito has the advantage here in defeating De La Hoya.

  6. THANK YOU! A TRUE BOXING FAN, THANKS FOR THAT PANCHO YOU JUST ANSWERED YOUR OWN QUESTION , AND I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY ONE WHO THOUGHT THAT DE LA HOYA WOULD BEAT MARGARTIO, C'MON PEOPLE, WE ALL KNOW THE MAYWEATHER/DE LA HOYA FIGHT WAS FIXED(WHICH IN THAT FIGHT MADE OSCAR LOOK BAD) AND HIS RECENT FORBES FIGHT WAS PRETTY GOOD, DE LA HOYA WOULD OUT CLASS MARGARTIO, MARGARITO IS GOOD AND ALL AND I RESPECT HIM BUT DE LA HOYA IS THE MAN. HE WOULD KNOCKDOWN MARGARITO , I WOULDN'T SEE A KNOCKOUT, AND DE LA HOYA WOULD COUNTER HIS EVERY MOVES AND OSCAR WILL WIN BY DECISION, IT WOULD BE SORTA LIKE DE LAHOYA/CHAVEZ MATCH EXCEPT IT WOULD'NT BE A TKO

  7. There is no bigger Oscar DelaHoya detractor than I.  All that being said, he would easily beat Margarito if it were an 8 rounder.  Much faster.  Oscar has been a fader since he fought Trinidad.  And if there's anything Margarito does better than anyone, it's finish strong.  No doubt Margarito-DeLaHoya would resemble Margarito-Cotto in that Margo's opponent will jump out to a big lead.  Once attrition set in, Margo would begin to climb into the fight much like a late running horse charges the leading horse at the Belmont.    I give Margo the edge in this fight, but it's a fight that is very winnable for DeLaHoya.  Styles makes fights, ODLH is faster and has legit boxing skill whereas Cotto has pretend boxing skill.  ODLH would perform better.

Boxing is always about the matchup of style, not how awesome a fighter did in his last fight.

  8. Oscar has a very good chance of winning versus Margarito. Everybody's just jumping on the Margarito defeat over Cotto. Cotto was a a great impersonator of Mayweather and possibly other boxers. That's pretty much all he had. Not much of a psyche. You can even see a little Paul Williams in Margarito's style now since he beat him fair and square. Didn't get started was the excuse I heard for that defeat. I guess the other 11 rounds didn't get his engine running either. I agree with the others De La Hoya can win this match.

  9. Many are judging how Oscar will do against Margarito based on his performance against Steve Forbes. Also, Oscar at times tend to disappear in late rounds in recent fights, which gives the impression that Oscar is done and on his last leg.

Cotto did okay dealing with Margarito in the first half of the fight. De La Hoya is a skilled and technical fighter, so if he can have the same success that Cotto had against Margarito for at least seven or eight rounds, then maybe.... just maybe he could get a decision over Margarito. Though I do think that Oscar would need to steel one of the last four rounds as well, to ensure victory.

  10. because oscar is old and overrated he is not gonna get the chance to fight margarito his carrer will be ended by pacquaio

  11. ok dude, listen de la hoya was once and still is a great name in boxing, he has skills talents etc, however his age man, and motivation arent that all great now, if a fight comes about margarito is the one with higher motivation to make a name for himself, dnt get me wrong oscar has a chance by outboxing him like the person above said, but margarito would land the brutal outcome on him, to me its all about how bad someone wants it, and at this peak margarito is the one with the highest motive in making a name for himself!

  12. Well first off i am a female boxing lover and i think that we shouldn't get to excited about seeing Oscar and Margarito fight. I mean pretty boy "Oscar" won't even fight Cotto. Do you really think now that Margarito beat Cotto he will fight him?

But to answer the question, i think people have that perception becuase Margarito is a FIGHTER not a boxer. If Oscar fights him he will have to out box him, and put his boxing skills to the test.

  13. only beaners think that Margarito will kill Dela hoya..

they need a new legendary young fighter to look in to because all of those great boxer that they have in this era are beaten by pacman(Morales,Barrera,Marquez) and some title holders have been defeated already( Daniel ponce Deleon, baby bull Diaz).

honestly i will still go with the golden boy.!!!

  14. Hola Pancho,

    well, you have to remember:

    1. DLH fades after 8 rounds.

    Watch the Trinidad fight again.

    2. Secondly Oscar has BIG problems with BIG guys.

Felix Sterm, Bernard Hopkins, Felix Trinidad to name a few.

Vs. Small guys, hes won all his titles.

    3. His heart is not in it anymore.  Oscar lost the "eye of the tiger"

    4.  Margarito is a beasth

  15. This would be a slaughter, in the first half of the fight margarito would be patient and put some pressure on and i think oscar like cotto did would jab and jab and throw quick combo's, but oscar dosent have the power of cotto and margarito will walk through it like he did against cotto.  And everyone knows down the stretch of fight fatigue set in on oscar and throws less punches and this cost him several fights in his career.  Well margarito dosent start smokin' until later on in the fight and when he does i think he will demolish a tired oscar and knock him out, because oscar is not as strong as cotto punching wise but he might be the same speed and Margarito is just a freak of nature, and i do think Margarito would walk him down b/c he is not slick enough to beat margarito.  if anyone beat margarito it is going to be a slick boxer that is quick and smart, like clottey or mosley maybe or paul wiliams maybe, but this guy is going to be extremely tough to beat.

  16. who are these people who think so?

    do they eat beans?
