Question:

Why does everyone think the UN etc. should support Georgia?

They attacked innocent people in South Ossetia, just because they want to be separate and exercise their right of national self determination. Why does everyone on here seem to think that they should be supported in this? In my opinion Russia should be in there, stopping Georgia from shelling innocent civilians, many of whom are Russian passport holders. Why does everyone think that Georgia should be supported in what to me (from reading the news reports) seems like totally un-called-for military action.

  1. The Georgians have little or No trust in Russia . They have lived in each others back yard for a very long time and Russia has not been very brotherly towards Georgia ,have they ? Exactly what always happens when there is NO Trust between each other.

  2. its a bit hard to really tell just whats going on over there. the waters are pretty muddy.

you have to think to your self why russia gave  the passports  to people of another nation in the first place.

you might want to look into the history books and see the last time a situation like this happened was when germany annexed poland under the pretenses of coming to the aide of some ethnic germans on the polish side of the germany poland border.

this is something that could esculate into a bigger and more grave conflict in the region as russia gets more powerful and bold as time goes by.

  3. Not everyone.  The UN has become a playground with rival camps regardless of the situation.  The British and Americans are fused at the hip no matter what the topic is.  Russia and China on the other.

Those of us who support Georgia are both naive and simplistic.  South Ossetia has been outside of Georgian influence since the early 90's and the Georgians have repeatedly said they would reign them back in.  The US and NATO supports Georgia not because they care about ints integrity but rather because it uses it to ensure military and financial access to both the Caucusus and a step to the Caspian Sea.  This incident is going to show the futility of making assurances to Georgia while not being able to do anything about it to defend that commitment.

Russia is going to do what it must, and it is doing it right now.  Georgia will fall into the category of yet another nation whose was given a green light by the West to act with impunity against a possible greater foe, Russia in this case, without any support being given to it in the end.  The people who support this do not understand that they are demanding things they want that they cannot help provide themselves.

Saakashvili planned this out and is completely responsible for the actual escalation.  He declared a cease fire, an attack, and a call for help all at once!  He thought the world would sleep due to the Olympics and gambled.  Now he is gambling that those American promises of aid come through.

Reality, is that like those who support Georgia in this, NATO and the US promised something they cannot deliver.  How many Americans want to volunteer to peacekeep in South Ossetia so it can remain Georgian?  Probably not that many...

Finally, we in the US will back down because we know if we do not, Russia will burn us in Iran by finishing the deal they have to supply S300 anti-air missiles.  We care more about Israel then Georgia, therefor the Georgians will be put in their place by Russia and those who support Georgia will cry about it without the will or ability to project what it preaches.

  4. Sorry, but let them sort their own problems out !

  5. What is wrong with bringing your own territory back under your control? Russia gave out those passports just so they could intervene militarily. I think they have been planning something like this for a while. It is all a ploy to stop Georgia from joining NATO and having a "threat" at their door step. Did Great Britain step in when the Union took back their territory from the Confederates? Russia is just trying to flex it's muscles and show the world it's power is returning. but if there were to be a war neither side would win, because in a last ditch effort to not lose I am sure one side would launch nukes. It would probably be Russia, because we would steam roll over them.

  6. it all depends who you have sympathy with/so not everyone thinks UN should interfere

  7. well said Mrs!

  8. Yes, let's forget that these "innocent" people have been attacking Georgians heavily for the last few weeks, and have been actively involved in attacks for a decade and a half.

Let's also not forget that the RUSSIANS encouraged the Ossetian criminals to start this civil war in the first place.. because RUSSIA wants to annex the territory.

Anybody who is here defending this Russian aggression is an idiot. This is a land grab by Russia, and has been in process for a long time.

  9. There is only 70 000 odd people in South Ossetia, certainly not worth a war, but Russia is more interested in Georgia not becoming a member of N.A.T.O. So any old excuse and they were bound to move in.

  10. "This is a land grab by Russia, and has been in process for a long time."

    1) Georgia invades Ossetia.

    2) This is a land grab by Russia?

Don't you see some inconsistency? Would not it be more reasonable to assume that it is a land grab by Georgia since Georgia invaded Ossetia?

  11. I totally agree with you. I am shocked that UK and US support Georgia, when it was Georgia who started the attack and then Russia interfered. Russian only wants to help innocent people and its citizens. I just cant beleive what I hear in the news.

Did US sponsor this another WAR? and makes new the way it wants to? to blame theit main rival, Russia?  thats the only explanation I can find and it seems very logical
