  1. The force that makes the golf ball go in the air is backspin. When you punch down on the ball the backspin causes the air under the ball to move faster than the top of the ball creating lift. The dimples, in their varying design form by manufacturers, cause the pocket of air called turbulence to be bigger causing more lift making the ball go further.  It is the new 'science' in golf ball design.  Some are deeper, different shapes.  I play with the Callaway which are shaped like Hexagons. Titlest and Top Flights even have different dimple types on the same ball.

  2. so the ball goes a fair distance, without them, the ball would not go nearly as far, nor have the same accuracy!

  3. They allow the ball to fly further and straighter.

  4. A golf ball has on average 330 to 500 dimples - depending on which company designs the ball. The dimples actually help the ball travel further and higher.

  5. this is not a joke... but its to break wind .... the dimples in the balls curve the wind resistance out from hitting the ball straight on in turn making the ball have less wind resistance .... making it travel farther .... my room mate says its to slow the ball down when rolling on the ground ..... take it how u want

  6. aerodynamics

  7. If they didnt the ball would do the same thing as a knuckle ball pitch

  8. try hitting a golf ball without them. no spin and no where. it is funny. the more dimples the higher the spin rate. more slice and hook.
