I noticed that whenever I buy ground beef, there are brown spots in it. I refrigerate it, I never let it spoil. What could it possibly be?

  1. If might be spots of brown beef.  When beef cannot get oxygen, it turns brown.  It's harmless.  The plastic it is wrapped in is designed to let oxygen in, so it stays pretty and red longer.  So the ground beef may be made at this particular store from some older beef that is no longer red.  Beef, if handled safely, is good for a couple-three weeks, so it's not a huge worry.

  2. Ground Beef naturally turns brown.  When you buy it in the store they color the outer part red to make it look more appetizing or fresh.  That's why it's usually red on the outside and brownish on the inside.  Just pay attention to the dates printed on the package and you should be safe!
