It is said that nothing happens unless God allows it to happen. It is also said that God is a good and benevolent God who will protect us. Already almost 100 people have been killed by Hurricane Gustav as it passed over some Caribbean island nations and as it strengthens and heads once again to the New Orleans area it is sure to take more lives and cause devastation of an already devastated area. Why? Serious, intelligent answers only please.

  1. Have you considered the possibility that there is no "He" to begin with?

  2. Taken from a Christian perspective, the earth is a living organism, so hurricanes have and always will happen.  It is actually a fascinating look into the force of nature. Here is the problem.  Take Hurricane Katrina--it was mainly those who have suffered as a result of exclusion, through lack of resources, being impoverished, and poverty in general.  And in all actuality, in terms of Scripture, it does not say that "nothing happens unless God allows it to happen", such as God willing it.

  3. Also the land was cursed. The land cannot do what it was created to do, God allows it.

It is also kind of silly to live in places like New Orleans, what do you think. I would not go blaming God for that choice

  4. Did you ever consider that if your god exists, (which I highly doubt) he's TRYING to kill off the Southern US citizens because they are too religiously stubborn to be of any use to him?  Biblical teachings have been so twisted in the southern style religions, they don't even resemble what the book teaches any more!

  5. This is one of the classic questions that agnostics and atheists ask.  And it comes down to this:  If God is all powerful, then he is not all loving because he allows such suffering to occur.  If God is all loving, then he is not all powerful or he would end all suffering.  It's that simple.

Abstract concepts are often thrown in to muddy the waters...like "Suffering exists because he gave us free will".  Arguments like this one are nonsensical.

  6. Things were fine when mankind lived in the Garden of Eden.  Unfortunately, man decided that he wanted to be like God.  Once man had known sin, he could not continue to live in a perfect world.  We left the Garden of Eden and began living in a world that was not so perfect.

Yes, God does allow suffering and pain, but He also gives us the courage and strength we need to deal with these calamities.  These are also opportunities for Him to send His Holy Spirit to us and encourage us to be His hands and feet.

Yes, people die in a hurricane.  If these people died in communion with God, He has already welcomed them into Heaven.  he has also sent people to the loved ones left behind to share His love.

  7. It's probably Satan's attempt. God cannot save all.

  8. Change weather patterns would be one reason. I am sure God knows other reasons presently.

    Why Gustov; ???

  9. The laws of Nature allowed it.

God is not always involved in what is happening in this tiny, remote planet.

  10. God was lonely, he needed more people in heaven. So he allowed the hurricane to tear up some islands. Now he wants to clean out the animal shelters in N.O., so he is pointing the Hurricane towards Louisiana. They are shipping all their strays to the D/FW area... this would never be allowed if not for God placing a hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico.

.....And evidently he loves high gas prices

    .....and Exxon.

  11. Sweetie...

These things are normal in nature... it's what keeps the Earth in balance.

Believe it or not... lightning replenishes ozone which is important for blocking out UV.

  12. It is said by whom? The very fact that you let another control your own mind, that is questionable. People say all sorts of things, all day, that does not mean it is all true. A hurricane is a hot and cold front spinning out of control to neutralize each other, nothing more.

  13. So sad to still be so superstitious in 2008.
