Why does he l**k when I pet him?

My cat licks and bites himself if I pet his back. It used to only be when I petted arond his tail and then it started to happen when I petted the middle of his back. Now I pet the starting of his back and he licks so I can only pet his head and tummy now. Why does he do this? I think it's spreading around his body... I'm really worried about it. Thx lots!!! :)

Cats will often groom themselves after being petted, partly to keep their coats orderly and partly to savor the scent you left.

When you pet his back, does it twitch? If so, that may be because his back is irritated and itching from fleas or some other problem.

I had a cat that loved to be scratched back there, and groomed himself to cover the indignity of making his catly ecstasy too obvious. My current one doesn't care. Her eyes close in bliss, her tongue flicks out and her head twitches.

You shouldnt be worried, your cat is normal, there are some possible things that he is doing:

* All cats groom theirselves ALL the time, especially after you groom them.

* After smelling your aroma it can be a sign of love for you.

* Many dogs and cats feel uncomfortable when you pet them, and after you are done they scratch, licks and bites the area.

* If this just happens when you pet it, try to stop petting him for a while and see the results, if he keeps doing it, he may have an allergy, in that case, or if you are really worried, take it to a vet (:

It might be making him itchy.

Another possibility, is he licks the area you pet to get to know how you smell. (Cats have a smelling organ on the top of their mouth)

Is your cat fat? I've seen cats do this before, and they're always fat. Maybe because they can't groom themselves in that area anymore.

Check him for fleas too.
