Why does high humidity make it hard for me to think?

As I get older I find that I am sluggish and stupid in humid weather. Why is this? Is there anything I can do to increase my brain power and concentration, other than turning the AC on and drying out the room?

  1. Not much.

You don't say how "older" you are, but heat and humidity are some of the highest stresses for older people.  As we age our bodies simply cannot circulate the blood as fast as it did in our youth.  The blood cools itself as it flows through our wrists and ankles because it that is where it is closest to the skin.  You can try running cool water over your wrists or keeping a cool damp cloth around your neck, but that really isn't going to do a lot.

Sorry, i know that is not what you wanted to hear.

It would be a good idea to mention your concerns to your doctor.  You may need to have your circulation checked out.

  2. Ginko Biloba

  3. I'm guessing the high humidity contributes to increased atmospheric pressure on your whoel body. When your body is "squeezed", the pressure has to go somewhere -- so everything that can contract, does so. That includes blood vessels, which normally bring enough oxygen to your brain. You could try to dilate the blood vessels (avoid caffeine), see if your blood pressure is high; increase the blood's capacity for carrying oxygen (take iron supplement, and check to see if your diet, medications or health are causing anemia or similar symtoms).
