  1. You can have multiple sources with video coming into the A/V receiver such as cable/satellite, a DVD player, a VCR, a gaming system. You only have to hook up one TV or video monitor, as when you switch between the different sources whichever one you select is sent to the screen. Sometimes it is even possible to select audio and video source monitoring separately. So you could do something like have the picture coming in from the cable or satellite, while still listening to  the music from your favorite album or radio broadcast.

  2. Simple, to do video switching even better there are receiver that can do video upconversion to 720p and 1080p via HDMI like the newer yamaha's

the sources would be in the receiver when you change sources the receiver change the source but the tv stay in the receiver monitor out source.

  3. you can have more than one source

  4. TV speakers are not very good and I want good sound from proper speakers. So my TV displays the image and the speakers produce the sound (all controlled by the amp) whether I am watching DVD, satellite or the kids are playing video games.
