  1. the hot water is breaking the ice, and I love that noise

  2. Because the density of the molecules is rapidly expanding (i.e. the ice is "growing" as a part of the melting process), which causes the ice to crack.

  3. Because the hot water is breaking the ice.

  4. Thermal shock.  The cold makes the ice contract and the heat makes it expand, so you get that cracking sound when the cold ice hits the hot liquid.

  5. its expanding

  6. Beats me. :)

  7. When water freezes, it contracts.  When it thaws, it expands. As ice expands, it stresses which causes the ice to crack.  The sounds of these cracks are transmitted through the ice.  The faster the ice is thawed, the greater the stress and hence more rapid and seemingly loud the cracking.  So if you melt ice quickly (like in a glass of hot water) then you will get that enthusiastic cracking noise you enjoy so much!  : )

  8. because the hot water and ur  putting cold in the hot water. it's like different element.

  9. Thermal expansion induces stress fractures.

  10. The molecules are beginning to vibrate and spread faster in the ice as it forms into a hot liquid state again.

  11. air is trapped in water when it freezes - heating this air causes it to expand - voila! - cracking ice...!

  12. because ice has holes and hot water enters and makes the sound

  13. the tempature change

  14. The ice expanding and breaking
