Why does intense lightning sometimes spoil computers, electronic instruments,apparatus or machine?

  1. Lightening is electricity.  If lightening hits nearby, excessive amounts of electricity can come down the telephone wires and the power wires to the house.  From there is bleeds into the circuits of electronic equipment, overloading solid state devices and capacitors at a voltage higher than they are rated at.  So they burn out.
