Why does it cost so much when your car is towed?

Like, when randomly towed from a parking spot or area. NOT when your car has broken down.

How much is actual costs to tow, and how much is profit for the towing company?

Tow trucks get lousy gas mileage.

Mechanic labor rates (and in most places it is a mechanic that drives the tow truck) make something like 75-90/hr.

Garages have to pay for the truck.

Insurance for the truck is much higher since it is a commercial vehicle 2-3x as much as private insurance.

Emergency tows cost more just like any emergency service costs more.

Tow trucks sit around a lot with out making money for their owners so when they are used the cost to the consumer is often fairly high.
