Yesterday in the night bus I noticed that eventhough I close my eyes,I can sense the lights from the other vehicles. But sense of sight is produced only when the image is formed on the retina. You can still sense the light with closed eyes. Why?

  1. "Estimated light transmission through the eyelids was 0.3% for blue, 0.3% for green, and 5.6% for red light. The eyelid was an effective attenuator and acted as a red-pass filter."

This is why you see red when you close your eyes while facing a light source..

  2. The cone cells in your retina can still sense the light, b/c your eyelids are thin enough for light to penetrate through them.

  3. because your eyelids are thin so even though the image cant form your eyes and sense the light. IF you close your eyes and look in the direction of the sun you'll see red and when you turn around they will see black. This is just because you are seeing through your eyelids.
