Why does it hurt when Table Salt is applied to an open wound?

What exactly happens when Sodium Chloride comes in contact with an open wound and why does it hurt so bad?

interesting question. I am not sure what actually happens... Should be something that happens when Sodium reacts with the cells in blood.
