I'm taking in a shirt and every time I try to sew it, it starts making knots to the point where it won't sew anymore and I have to cut out all the thread! What am I doing wrong? I think I have the sewing machine settings set wrong, so how should they be set? (Stitch length, width..?)

  1. Yes check the tension and also be sure it is threaded correctly, both on the top and in the bobbin.  The stitch length should be 2 - 2.5 and the width 0 for straight stitching.  Your fabric should be under the needle  for the first stitches otherwise knots can form.  One other thing, make sure the presser foot is down.  Good Luck!

  2. check the tension setting on the thread going from the spool to the needle.. i had that problem when I started with a new sewing machine... go over everything..

    hope that helps :)

  3. Make sure you are using a NEW needle that is right for the fabric. Ball point for knits and sharp for woven . If you are unsure, use a #14 universal needle. You need to remember to hold the two threads at the back until you have taken a few stitches. Try sewing first on a scrap of fabric until you get the settings right. Good luck!

I almost forgot, Never use cheap thread.
