Why does it keep showing "Input invalid" on my screen when plug my DVD into my Sony KDL40s4100?

I was watching a dvd, when i decided to see the set up menu on the dvd, then the screen went blank, the music was still there, but no picture. I tried using another disk but it just kept saying "input invalid" its the first time it has ever done that. I tried removing and re-attaching the cables, but it didn't make a difference.

Please help.

Unplug it from the wall, wait 30 s, plug it back.

Most players don't allow you to see the setup menu while a DVD is playing, so I am surprised the SONY allowed it.
