Why does it ring so much before answering machine comes on?

When I bought the phone it rang 3 times now it rings about 6 times before the answering machine comes on. I dont have the manual and its nowhere to be found online at all. General Electric Model#27996GE3-A.

it uses a ring counter. there may be a setting for 4 rings or 1 ring after it has taken a message.

this is all programmed in the PIC on the board in the answering machine and unless youcan write PIC software, it is pretty much set in stone.
