Why does it seem like less cat owners spay/neuter their cats then dog owners? It feels like every other question in the cat section is "is my cat pregnant?" or "my cat is in labor, what do I do?". Then there's the "my cat is in heat" questions.

It's not to say there's no "I want to breed my dog" questions in the dog section, it just seems more people let their cats wander around and get pregnant. I see posts proclaiming that this latest pregnancy cat's second or even /third/ litter.

It's kind of depressing and certainly explains why there's so many cats dying in shelters :(.

  1. i can't get my cat nuetered because i can't afford it. alot of people can't afford simple things because the rising prices of everything else. i think i can take the risk of a pregnant cat more than having the furry family member go hungry.

  2. Not sure either, my cat was given away to the humane society after she got preggo, couldn't understand why in two years her owners didn't have her sprayed.  Thankfully she got a good home with me and hopefully the same happened to her kittens.  One of the problems is that cats are more likely to be strays.  Lots more feral cats around  then wild dogs.  It's a lot easier to find a kitten from a family friend or a co-worker then a puppy.  Unlike puppies, which usually come from breeders or humane society were they are usually fixed unless the dog will be breed itself later, cats are coming from friends and family and it falls on the new owner to do it.  Lot of people don't even take their cats to vet for basic shots.

If anyone out there wants to do the right thing and fix there still un-neuter/sprayed cat, the humane society offers low cost spraying/neutering usually once a month, it will cost you maybe 10-20 bucks or nothing if you talk with a case worker and convince them that you cannot afford it.  Stop the problem people, some of those poor cats spend months waiting for a new home in a little cage or worse they are put down to make room from more kittens.

Before I get off my soap box, also consider a older cat, I adopted by baby when she was four years old and have had her for two years, I couldn't ask for a greater cat, she is loving, well behaved and beautiful.

  3. It's sad, isnt it? I think there's a problem for both dogs AND cats, but different ones.

Cat owners just *dont* spay/neuter. They must not see the importance.

Dog owners, though, dont spay/neuter because they think breeding will make them money.

    Both types are selfish, IMO.

  4. Because I think that most people (not me by far) think cats are more disposable that dogs.  They don't think it is as important to spay or neuter their cat.
