  1. To whom "does it seem people in small communities are happier than people in cities"?

A recent survey on the level of happiness in the world's countries does not support your statement. (If I remember right, those from Denmark are happiest, on average, and those in Zimbabwe are the least happy.)

I've lived in cities as big as Boston. Now, I'm living with a population probably less than 600. Knowing practically every person makes many things easier: some good, some not so good.

I think Germaine Greene said it best when she wrote that in a complex society, people may be lonely but they have privacy. In a simpler society, everyone knows your business, but an old lady isn't going to be trapped, alone, with a broken hip (!)

  2. people in cities.....even though they live and work amoung millions of other people......its a lonely existance.

the smaller the community, the closer the people in it generally are.

  3. Life in a big city is dog eat dog. Think about it, you sit in traffic, you sit at lights, it takes 20 minutes to go 2 blocks. You stand in line at the store after fighting through the crowds in the aisles, this goes on day after day. Everybody's pissed off and nasty towards each other. Then you finally make it home to safety and you hear sirens wailing throughout the night. There's murder and mayhem, don't dare walk the streets at night. Now, life in a small village, what do the people have but each other. They all have to work together to better their living environment. They don't have to worry about locking their doors, who's gonna break in? I love small town life, gets a little boring at times, but sure beats living in mass population.

  4. maybe because people in small community live a simple life (simpler than the people in the city). if you lived in a small village you would knew everybody in the village. so the degree of suspicion is lower.

but in the big city many people are feel threatened by the others.

  5. Well, in my opinion, it all depends on one's personality. Some people are vibrant, dynamic and loquacious while others seek peace and harmony with nature and find it hard to make relationships with many people. Life is also much simpler and much more stable in more rual areas than in the city. Cities are a hub for demographic shifts these days, with people competing for jobs and less people working on farms and manufactoring.
