Why does it seem that most hockey rumors are just discussions of the obvious situations?

As an example: “Penguins hops Dallas-Detroit series goes to seven game”

LOL. Really? The Penguins want Dallas or the Wings to be exhausted? Never would have figured that out…..<<Sarcasm>>

So....... Why does it seem that most hockey rumors are just discussions of the obvious situations? Is there a lack of gossip? Am I missing a great rumor websites?

  1. In Toronto there is always a rumour going on.

Gord Kirke, one of the members of the TML GM search team was seen getting on a plane to San Francisco. Immediately the papers sent a spy to SF to try and find out who else was going to be there since the Golden Seals have long since gone out of business.

Just maybe he went for a holiday. But the papers were full for a couple of days.

Nobody is allowing the Leafs to talk to anybody of value under contract so the rumours are wild in this town. Oh by the way is the Stanley Cup Series still going on. The Toronto papers seem to be neglecting it for some reason.

  2. The columnists are hedging their hockey expertise.....which unfortunately isn't much. Like you say, most columnists point out the obvious and in doing so are really protecting their job in a way. They state the obvious, it happens, their unknowledgable loyal readers see them as "smart" hockey experts when in fact they probably haven't even watched a playoff game yet. Its pretty much the Vegas of hockey journalism. Do the writers take the safe route and go with the public sentiment and obvious situations or do they go for the long odds and challenge the general consensus? Most writers have no balls so they go with the safe bet. A few will challenge and although it may not happen, they definitely made for a better piece of journalism!

  3. I like the ones where the media "thinks" a team needs something. For example, Sharks and Panthers needing a coach. "We think San Jose and Florida are looking for a coach." Naw, really? Wouldn't've guessed that myself.

  4. I think its the nature of mainstream sports journalism to err on the side of caution, 99% of everything said on ESPN and written on Yahoo, NHL.com etc. is pretty straight forward, why stick your neck out when you can get paid for stating the obvious.

  5. i think its just because their the only four teams in the NHL playing right now, and Thats all they have left to talk about. The PENS moved on and now we're waiting to see wahts going to happen between the Wings and the STARS so everyone's just making up their own type of scenario's. *Sigh*

  6. I think the fact that there are so many media outlets leaves them grasping a little for stories. They all need something to write about the NHL at this point in the year and really, when it comes down to it, how many stories can you write about a 6-0 drubbing in game 5 of the conference finals.

  7. Since the media has no common sense, they fail to recognize it in others. So when people use common sense the media assumes there is a rumor behind it.

  8. There is no T.O. around to get the popcorn ready. Though I did hear that Giambi wears a golden thong to break out of a slump. I guess hockey hasn't got anything like this.

  9. Wait a minute this is good stuff.....So they want them to go to Game 7..You do have the best gossip H.

Maybe because its past the trade deadline and nobody's getting claimed off waivers so a few websites have to get some rumors floating out there and what better way then drivel.

  10. with nothing going on but 2 series' (ex.trades, free agent signings)it has been slow in the hockey world news wise.We can read about Dion Phaneuf in Hawaii with Elisha Cuthbert. Its the same with the NBA writing a story about Lebron James yelling at his mom.Either way-who gives a S**t.Nobody in the US seems to care about the worlds going on.I would like to see more news about the AHL though. At least it would give us something to read.
