Question:

Why does it seem to be a continuous debate over Ganguly's retirement?

Seems like his "age" factor has over taken on everyone's mind but please answer a simple question--

Whenever a big player retired, he admitted that he has had "no motivation" left to keep playing, most of them said that.

Now if a cricketer still enjoys the game & loves to go against the odds, then why not just let him?

Mind you age is not a factor for a player's "bad form". What do you say about those "young" guys who get into this phase when they struggle to make runs!!

Ok selectors would drop them! then what! If the player has enough motivation he would still keep testing himself, why FORCE him to retire?

& there's a saying "Retiring with dignity", now what much difference will it make if Sourav "announces" his retirement. People would still keep saying that he knew he won't be selected thats why he took the safe way out.

We know this man for making his different mark, so why not let him do what he thinks is a satisfying way for him even at this stage?

  2. Agreed! Age is not a factor for "bad form"! But, Dada has to answer all his critics by playing a good inning! His performance in the first test and in the second test wasn't good! The team is suffering bcoz of his bad form and he himself is giving chance to his critics to speak up! Actually, not only Dada but many other players are also not doing well! When Viru can play well against Lankan spinners, then why can't Dada??? Dada is very good player against spinners and he indeed is one of the greatest players of India! If Dada's bad form would continue in the next match too, then i guess he would again be criticised or he may even be dropped!!! But still we all know that Dada is a fighter and he willn't loose hope too easily! He will surely keep on trying.....and yes he shouldn't be forced to retire. As u said, the selectors may drop him but he should 've the right to seek retirement acc. to his will!

I guess, Dada's next inning will decide his fate. I hope he plays well!

  3. Ganguly is getting too old, he is not getting the runs and right now India seems set to chalenge Australia as test champions.

Your last sentence means Ganguly would be doing what is best for him, not what is best for team and that is selfish.

  4. Well, sadly it's the fact that majority of the Indian fans are calling for Sourav Dada's retirement, owing to his recent poor performances. The is that belief that he is too old to do any good for the Indian team any longer. But I too agree to your view that a cricketer can go through a bad form  at any stage of his career, and it does not always depends upon this age. It happened with even the greatest of cricketers.

While calling for Ganguly's retirement at this stage, people tend to forget that he underwent a slump in his career even before, but he fought back very strongly, ending up being the most successful Indian batsman last year! Likewise, perhaps, the "comeback man" can repeat the same performance even again, if given a opportunity. Anyway, retirement is entirely upto Dada, and no one has the right to force their own decisions upon him.

It's not that Dada has to retire just because his critics, media, and some fans feel that he has nothing more to offer Indian cricket. If he still has the passion, and thirst for runs, then there is nothing which stops him from continuing the game. Even if he is dropped from the national team, he can go back to the domestic level, playing Ranji cricket etc, like he did when he was axed earlier. I really don't understand how many tests he has yet to pass inorder to prove his worth. You are probably right in saying that if Sourav retires at this stage, it would almost seem as if he is escaping from the reality of being thrown out of the team. That would be running away from the battle like a coward-something which just doesn't match with his temperament.

Personally, I would like to see Dada proving himself again for one last time, and then announce his retirement straightaway, in the face of his critics. And it's never easy to succeed, when everyone is discouraging you from all sides. But I know Dada is still here, only because the will to perform is still alive within him. He wants to walk off with honour, and when he would have achieved that, he would depart.

"The continuos debate over Ganguly's retirement", as you call it is on account of the fact that some people including many cricketers, ex-cricketers and board officials have always been prejudiced against Sourav, and they would be delighted to see him retire. Certain sections of the media is also propagating hatred against Dada, and the debate is on, because Ganguly refused to believe in what everyone else believes about him.

"I'm a firm believer that what you think about yourself is most important. Not what others think about you"

    .-----Sourav Ganguly

  5. Ganguli has proved him self and he has nothing more to prove. Cricket history will notice his contribution to the indian cricket. We have Sachin, Ganguli, and Dravid in that order that it will take years to produce such talents. If all of these players decide to retire tomorrow it will be a loss to the Indian cricket. I'm sure they have a lot to feel good about them selves for their contribution to the game of cricket.

  6. I feel sad when I hear harsh words from youth about anyone older- not just Sourav. It is similar to the youngsters throwing old people out of their own hard earned homes.

Sourav has given his playing years to India. He does have some play left. He should be allowed to do so. He did not play well; neither did most of them. Only 3 people really performed; Gautam, Sehwag and Harbhajan. ishant, I am not including in the list. so why just Sourav is attacked every time.

Jayasurya is older than him. Still batting. So are so many players in the Word. He is being cornered, and pressure put on him. Yes, he has ruffled many feathers in his time. But that is what made him a strong Captain.

  7. Hmmm......

tough job for Ganguly also to decide which is the correct time to take retirement. But still now he has the zeal in him to perform and get back in his good old form. Lets pray some good luck for our old hero.

  8. he is old not performing these talk r obviously r going to there

  9. I don't think age should be criteria for retirement.  If one has motivation and hunger for runs, he should continue to play.  Jaisurya is touching 40 years, but he still plays cricket like a tenager or Sachin's enthusiasm is still not diminished.

I think Saurav's personality is responsible for this debate.  He ruffled many feathers and involved in politics during his heydays.  It is the case of 'You reap what you sow.'.  All said and done, I think Saurav still can contribute to Indian Cricket.

  10. I agree with you..........

"Age" is not a factor....May be it is a factor when it comes to agility.....

but it is not a factor when it comes to ability.......

I am not the gr88est fan of Dada...But still, that doesn't make him a bad player......he is an awesome player.......and the decison to quit must be entirely up to him....

According to me he must retire when he feels that he doesn't enjoy the sport any more........
