  1. It depends on the quality of the track.   But the fact is, the train is moving.  You just can't expect it to be steady, and you should be ready for it to move at any time.

  2. It's called lateral movement. It can be caused by worn rail or worn equipment or a combination of both.

  3. When a train goes around a curve or crosses over a junction, centrifugal forces are set up which can be felt by the passengers, as a sideways motion. The tracks are angled inward slightly toward the curve to counteract this. It's known as superelevation.

The Italian Railways developed a train known as the Pendolino which tilts into the curve, again to counteract the centrifugal force. Trains of this type are now in use in the UK.

Also if the rails are jointed, the motion over the rails can cause the carriage to rock from side to side. This is less likely to happen on lines with continuous welded rail.

  4. Rail road beds thats what the tracks lay on are not as solid as highways and the tracks give with the weight of the train.

    Causing a swaying motion.

  5. Rails are not smooth and train cars have steel wheels. Any imperfection on the rail surface or variations in gauge (the distance between the rails) will cause the motion you described.
