Question:

Why does it stink so bad in Ponce, PR?

Like once a week, or so, the city stinks of f***s, and stuff. I'm staying across the street from Hospital Damas, but the stench stretches for miles. It happens at night. The stench seeps in through the window shutters, since there is no glass (another weird thing about this place) and keeps me from being able to sleep. It makes me nauseous, dizzy, and gives me a headache.

What is causing this stench? What can be done about this problem? Is anyone trying to do something about it? Also, why is there no glass in the window? You'd think that would be important living in the tropics and trying to cut cooling costs.

  1. It is the RUM Factory overthere.

  2. people p**p on the streets over there.

  3. ignore ignorant people like frankie's response, I agree with Judith

  4. Air conditioning in Puerto Rico, especially the smaller towns outside the Metropolitan area, are more of a commodity than a necesity... When I was growing up, none I knew had A/C... there were the metal windows, with the screening, that were kept open during the day to allow natural ventilation.

While most of my family has "upgraded" their windows to glass when they remodeled, not everyone in Puerto Rico has the money to do all the adjustments required to switch to glass windows, and put A/C.

The metal windows have smaller blades, thus allowing more air in which is that desired effect for homes without A/C.

These, of course, do not insulate the home when closed, and that's what allows the horrible smell to invade your sleep.

As to the origin of the smell, I can't help you there...I haven't been living in the island for a while now (I do visit often), but the Hospital could be having problems with their septic systems (figures, they are drowning in their own sh*t)

From my experience, government things take a lot of time to get fixed (the potholes on the street are an obvious example) so if it is the hospital, good luck! it might take a while...

If you can, try to upgrade the metal screening to the plastic kind, and figure out a way to insulate the edges with duck tape or something, and invest in a small in room cooling unit...

    Sorry :-(

  5. You sure it's Ponce, Senorita?

  6. I think that you smell the Mangroves (generally) are trees and shrubs that grow in saline coastal habitats in the tropics and subtropics. All depend were you were staying, if you were on a beach house you will felt it more , but is weird cause all of the beach houses and hotels now have air conditioning.
