1. You can stop it in limewire by just selecting not to share folders in the sharing options.

(no offence but you should get on top of this immediately..you could be sharing stuff from your puter that you don't want to)

  2. when you download a torrent, you are reciving bits and parts of the whole file, this is all coming in from the other users.

Stopping the upload rate is a bit selfish as you are not sending any data to other people who are downloading it. Also ISP (internet service provider) gives you the upload rate and download rate. These are independent of each other. So when you are uploading your download rate is not effected.

  3. In bittorrent content is transferred by individuals, that is why it is always uploading.

It is necessary to cap upload.  You want to set upload as high as possible as this will get you more download from other peers.  However, setting it too high, or unlimited, will hurt download speed as needed communications will not be able to get through.

This general guide on optimizing bittorrent clients for speed has info to help on this and also links to specific guides for the better and more popular clients:

  4. All Bit Torrent softwares work on the principle that all users should share files. This is mandatory to prevent file-leeching (the selfish attitude of users in wanting to download files without wanting to share any file in return). To accomplish this, Bit Torrent softwares uses an internal counter called "Uplink/Downlink Ratio" that will determine your actual download speed. It is the ratio of the total number of Kbytes uploaded to the total number of Kbytes downloaded. This ratio must always be at least 1 or higher. If you are a leecher, your uplink value will become low in comparison to your downlink value (hence the ratio becomes less than 1, since you are leeching). As a result, your download speed is reduced in return.

In summary, the higher the Uplink/Downlink ratio, the higher your download speed becomes; the lower the Uplink/Downlink ratio, the slower your download speed becomes. You should always share files to keep the ratio above 1 (this is called seeding).

So, to answer your question, stopping the upload will make your Uplink = 0, and the Uplink/Downlink ratio then becomes 0. As a result, your download speed becomes reduced (or in the worst case, your download speed also becomes 0).

  5. thats called seeding and it affects your download speed only a little but no you cant stop it.

people who download torrents are asked to seed because that way the person can download the file faster.

  6. With most torrent download clients you can limit the amount of upload in your Preferences or options settings, but by doing this you can also decrease your download speed. You need to try a few different upload speeds to maximise your uploads. If nobody uploaded, you wouldn't be able to download. Share the Love. :-)

  7. because you have to share in order to download. a fraction of your bandwidth is reserved for uploading, so, yes it slows you down, but you have to reserve at least some for uploading in order to download. that's just how torrents work!
