  1. The mountainous terrain is a result of Japan being a very volcanically active country. Many of the mountains arose from volcanic activity - the famous Mount Fuji is an extinct stratovolcano. Volcanic soil is well known for its fecundity, packed with calcium, iron, nitrates, phosphates and potassium, which help nourish plants. The climate too is well suited to different plants and crops - moist and rainy in the north for forests and pasture, subtropical in the south for rice, tea, tobacco and soy.

  2. Every country has its own special characteristics that make it beautiful.  Truly, within in each country, in this case Japan, each prefecture has its' own unique beauty, from the beautiful snow covered Hokkaido to the beautiful hidden lagoons of 1000 islands near sasebo.  I always had the impression that Japan had a tranquility unmatched in its' land, a unique harmony not found anywhere else.  But I'm kinda idealistic :p
