What he said ^ I think why he is wearing the mask now, (since he's over the whole "follow ninja code" thing) is so people won't see his fake smiles when peeps ask him questions like "who was the white fang?" so he can just smile and say it was his dad... Even though he prolly didn't feel like smiling...

**Here`s the truth!!**

The reason being is because your face is your identity right?! So kakashi s father, the White Fang, opted to save the lives of his comrades over the mission and abondoned it! It s againest the law of the village to abondon any mission so his father became a disgraced ninja! This caused him to reach the point in his depression where he killed himself, kakashi didn t want to end up like him so he changed! Dedicating himself to following the rules and regulations of the village! That meant showing no emotions! He didn t want to be seen as having any resemblence to his father, the White Fang and didn`t need to show any emotions so he started wearing a mask. It wasn t until he was 13 and his dying teammate, Obito Uchiha, had finally convinced him that his father was a true hero! Although he seems to have been mistakenly regonized to be his father by Granny Chiyo i think its because she s old and seemed to be just joking around. I think it was his silver hair that striked a resemblence between him and his father, seeing as he has silver hair, too! Which I think is a trait of the Hatake clan for the boys!:)
