Why does lightning occur mostly when it rains? (Simplify please)?

I want a simple answer to why mostly when it rains lightning occur. Be scientific it is for my Science class. PLEASE!!!!!

  1. sure because when it is raining the sky is covered by cloud. Lightning is produced by collision of molecules in the air as the rise and fall in a thunderstorm.. it happens between cloud.

    but lightning can happen without rain. Lightning can also occur within the ash clouds from volcanic eruptions, or can be caused by violent forest fires which generate sufficient dust to create a static charge"

    there is also Dry lightning, Dry lightning is a term in the United States for thunderstorms which produce no precipitation at the surface. This type of lightning is the most common natural cause of wildland fires. Dry lightning may also be referred to as heat lightning."


  2. Lightning comes when two weather "fronts" come together and moisture particles collide.  Rain = moisture in one of those fronts, hence, lightning and rain are often together.  There you go.

  3. Last Night we had 1/2 hour of lightning before it started to rain, then the 65mph winds hit, Then it poured for five minutes, gave us .71 of an inch  rain, then 20 more minutes of straight-down lightning without rain.
