Why does long-term trade surplus lead to a loss in int'l confidence in economy & lack of int'l competitiveness

What i know is that, long-term trade surplus can cause inflationary pressure. But i can't see why it'll affect a country's economy (internationally) as stated in my qn.

  1. No reason to believe it does.

    Just take a look at Japan after WW II and China today. Even after its bubble burst, Japan is competitive internationally.
