  1. Well, flash memory is what is called solid-state memory, meaning that it has no moving parts.  A hard drive has physical discs that spin inside.  The moving parts in a traditional hard drive is more fragile than the solid-state memory of a flash drive because they are more easily damaged.  As long as you take good care of your mp3 player and don't drop it, it should be fine whatever kind of memory you get.  However, if you plan on using the player for mostly active use, like running or other kinds of exercise, something flash based, like the iPod Nano is probably a better option.  No moving parts to damage while you are moving around a lot.

  2. Flash drives arent as sensitive as a hard drive, and in fact it is totally different. Flash drives do not have Disks or Disk readers, like a hard drive. It is basically like memory from a floppy disk. USB memory sticks pretty much only use Flash Drives by the way. Flash drives though do not hold as much as a hard drive can, but are more commonly used in less expensive MP3 players, and are less prone to breaking, unlike hard drives. Hope this helped.
