Why does mist/fog muffle sound when sound travels better through water?

  2. as the molecules in a liquid are in intimate contact with each other, sound is transmitted well as the collisions between particles are near perfect as they almost touch.

    In the case of mist or fog, particles in the air are not touching and have a significant mass. As sound waves move through the misty air, energy is absorbed by the particles of moisture as they move along with the compression waves in the air.

    Absorption of the enegy by the moving particles reduces the energy in the sound wave, hence reducing the volume and muffling the sound.
