  1. As the sun rises in the East in the Northern Hemisphere of the Earth the sun shines mainly one the south side of a tree and sets in the western sky therefore keeping the moss from growing anywhere but on the north side of a tree. This is because moss needs to be kept damp, the areas where sun is almost always present will be dry and cause any moss present to dry out ( the south side where the Sun is shining.

IIn the Southern hemisphere of the Earth it would be the reverese as the moss would be found on the south side due to the sun rising and setting.

In rainforests I beleive and you might need to check this but due to the nature of lots of trees cramped together the moss is found on all sides of the trees as the lower down you get towards the ground where the sun is hard to get to, moss grows freely due to the damp but humid conditions.

  2. Sorry to kill and old saying [wifes tale] but moss will grow on any side of a tree. Never depend on it to find a direction.

  3. Usually it's trees and rocks. The sun doesn't shine on the north side and it stays damper.

  4. in the northern hemisphere,  the north side is less exposed, so less moisture escapes.   I would assume that it might be the opposite in the southern hemisphere...
