01 Bon Jovi / "Livin' on a Prayer" 1986

02 Def Leppard / "Pour Some Sugar On Me" 1987

03 Duran Duran / "Hungry Like the Wolf" 1982

04 Michael Jackson / "Billie Jean" 1982

05 Prince / "When Doves Cry" 1984

13 U2 / "With Or Without You" 1984

14 The Bangles / "Walk Like an Egyptian" 1986

15 Van Halen / "Jump" 1984

17 Whitesnake / "Here I Go Again" 1982

18 Dexy's Midnight Runners / "Come On Eileen" 1982

19 Cyndi Lauper / "Time after Time" 1984

How come today's music doesn't have messages like these songs? Am I the only one who feels this way?

  1. Some of those songs like "Billy Jean" and "Time after Time" have been redone in this century. This is the definition of a good song, it gets a lot of covering and can be rearranged for any era.

  2. Because Elvis really is dead and The Beatles broke up long before John died. *sigh*

  3. well i'm not a fan of old rock but i am a fan of disco and old techno, but yea i do know what you mean though, its all c**p rap, and they spread a really bad message

  4. Because now a days the industry only think of the artist style and how they look instead of talent! and that's why we now have talent less singers singing a bunch of c**p that is only about s*x!

  5. The record companies want to make money and songs that have a good message aren't as popular and don't sell as well as meaningless songs with a good beat.

  6. It's all a matter of your age.  Your list sucks to me.  You should have been here in the 50s when music was good.  However, I agree, your list looks real good compared to today's noise.

  7. less drug use ?  less creativity ?   less talent?  your perspective might be coming strictly from the pop charts - always been more into college radio and indy - still lots of goodness there.

Is it really so bad?   What about bands like Radiohead, Sublime, The Killers, Gorrillaz, Coldplay,  Flobots, Jack Johnson, Moe?  Or still-active older bands = REM, the Cure, etc...

  8. Because music, like Hollywood, has become so corporatized that it has killed real creativity. Want to find good music that isn't just corporate puke? Tune into your local college station and hopefully you'll hear some good independent music.
