Question:

Why does my 1990 Toyota PU surge when idleing after it has warmed up?

Idles fine when I start it but when it warms up the rpm increases and drops continuously. Sometimes I can stop it for a little while by putting it in neutral and taking my foot off the brake. Once the engine is fully warmed up, whether the brake is on or off makes no difference. The truck is a 4 cylinder, FI, manual transmission and vacuum assist power brakes.

  1. Sounds like a vacuum leak. The best way to check that is to have a shop with a smoker 'smoke' the system for you so the leak can be identified. Most likely (other than the diag fee), the repair itself should be inexpensive.

  2. clean the throttle body and throttle blade with gum-out spray carburetor cleaner. You have to remove the rubber duct attached to the throttle body don't use too much or you may flood the intake.Hold the throttle blade all the way open and use an old toothbrush to clean the blade and deeper into the throttle body.Don't forget to re-attach the duct
