  1. It is to say in doggie language "get off of my property" you should really know this sort of stuff before you got a dog.

Dogs are very protective, which is why they act strange often.

  2. Collies are territorial she's warning you someone is at the door or outside.  My Weim goes nuts when someone walks by the house and also when someone knocks.

Desensitize her to the knocking door by training her with a friend so that she doesn't react as badly when someone comes over.

  3. Be grateful. On day you may be visited by someone with evil intentions. Not many crooks will take on a dog, especially collie sized!

  4. I agree with the others, he is guarding his territory. Victoria Stilwells book - its me or the dog- gives great advice on dealing with this particular problem

  5. My puppy is fine with the postwoman as she knows her but when the poor free paper lady slunk into the garden yesterday she barked incessantly till she got off land then as gate shut she stopped and wagged her tail as if to say that showed her!

Best thing is that since she has found her voice the irritating children  no longer bother coming into the garden anymore playing commandos and stuff as they are scared livid when she hurls herself at the door!

  6. Dogs are bark for a reason.

If someone is coming to the door and knocks his/her bark could mean that they are warning you about something being there, they could be greeting this person, could be territory issues, guarding..

  7. because hes either really happy with the visitor or he really hates the intruder. it might just be that the sound of the knocking or doorbell scares him.

  8. My dog does that too. Probably letting you know that there is someone there. Almost like a burglar alarm. lol! If there was a burglar (Don't worry! Doesn't happen too often) the dog would bark and let you know there is someone there. Dogs have very good hearing so they would hear a noise and know there was someone there. Hope this helps! :) x

  9. he is defending his territory

  10. He is alerting you and protecting his territory. That is his job as guardian of the household.

  11. Because you let him do it. Sound like he needs some obedience training. Sign up for some classes so you get trained on how to train your dog. Good Luck.

  12. Probably because she doesn't know them and she wants to protect her owners. Also once she starts barking, the person she's barking at probably gets scared by her barking and so your collie senses this fear and it makes her scared so she acts on it by barking even more and so the problem escalates and escalates and escalates. But mostly she's probably just trying to defend and protect her owners and show whoever's walking into your house that their walking on her territory.

  13. Your dog thinks it is the pack leader. Therefore, as with wolf packs, it tries to protect and alert the other pack members (you). If you were the pack leader your dog would be far less stressed and would not have to act in this way. You should be dominant over your dog. Dogs that are not constantly trying to be pack leader are happier and calmer.

Try reading "Be the Pack Leader" by Cesar Millan. There are lots of helpful tips in there.
