Ok I just recently got a beetle, 4 speed 1.5L beetle. Some times when I drive the car it stalls and dies, not all the time, most of the time nevertheless. When I got the car it needed a clutch and so I sent it to get a new clutch with the kit. I accelerated the carburetor and moved the time, and it still stalls, but it did run better. what could it be?

  1. Did it stall when you needed the clutch but did not have it changed yet?

Now with the clutch changed it stalls?

I would check all the spark plugs first and be sure they are all good.  Also, same goes for valve lash.   Then you know the motor is doing the best it can.

Before I start blaming the carb.  And here I would start with cleaning the aircleaner first(easiest).  It could be the fuel mixture s***w needs to be a little richer(or leaner)  On the right hand side of the carburator you should see a little brass s***w with a slot head  That is the mixture s***w.  Turn it a 1/4 of a turn and mark this down on a piece of paper as to where you start because it is hard to remember after awhile.  (The mixture would be affected) if the aircleaner was full too.  That is why you clean the cleaner first.

  2. What I would do is start with the fuel tank.  That old a car, its going to have trash in the fuel tank.  Empty it out and make sure it has no trash or water.  Secondly, If it was clean, then go the carb.  Make sure all the vacuum lines are hooked up.  Make sure all the intake nuts are tight.  Now go to ignition.  Do you have a new type electronic ignition system.  I would recommend it.  The points were hard to work on.  When you say you accelerated the carb and moved the time, you have to be careful you understood what you did.  I always timed my vw statically with the key on  and watched the spark.  When it sparked that is where my mark on the crankshaft pulley should have been.  If you're interested in toying around with this yourself, get the "compleat idiot book on VW's", by John Muir.  Amazon has them, I've checked.

  3. clogged fuel filter

    bad fuel pump

    wrong octane rating of fuel

fouled or incorrectly gaped spark plugs

oh, yeah, it is a VW they suck ****.
