Every time i travel on my gravel road i have to go really slow. Its wierd though. I can stop and not even gas the entire way. The car will just go by itself (around 10mph). Its really wierd. Whats wrong with my car and how can i fix it?

  1. roughboy is probably right but another possibility is the idle is set too high

  2. Perhaps the idle is set too high, you should have a mechanic check it out, its probably effecting your brakes and possibly your gas mileage!  It COULD be nothing, but nothing wrong with having it checked.  I work at a salvage yard by the way.....

  3. If it has an automatic transmission, there's nothing wrong with it, they all do this, so, just leave it alone.

  4. Let me guess: automatic tranny?

With the gear selector in D, the transmission is always in gear, so if the engine is turning it can apply torque to the drive wheels.  At low engine speeds the torque converter that permits the engine to turn at different speeds from the tranny is still transmitting power to the wheels, just not very well.  It's enough to move the car at low speed.  The TC has to permit some slip in order for the brakes to be able to work, and for the engine to be able to idle while the car is stopped.

As the engine turns faster, the torque converter works better and better at transmitting the full power to the tranny, until the lockup engages and it behaves as a solid connection.

  5. It's probably in drive, and 10 mph is too slow even at idle. Next time, put the trans in L and see what happens.
