  1. its shy?

  2. Some birds just do that :-)

It could also be that he's "practicing".  Birds will usually talk softly to themselves until they figure they've gotten the word or phrase down correctly - then you'll start hearing it.  But it isn't unusual at all for them to practice quietly - or for some to be "closet talkers".  I have one that won't say a word while I'm in the room but talks up a storm if I'm in another part of the house.

You may try reinforcing him for speaking in your presence.  Any time you "catch him" talking, tell him what a good boy he is and give him a treat.  If you do this consistently, he'll start talking more in your presence.

    Good luck,

    Colette

  3. My African Grey will talk in front of me, but when anyone else calls he doesn't say a word.

It's thought that they like to practise when they think no one is listening, until they have the words right then they will speak in front of people, but Bob's words are perfect and he will still only speak in front of the family.

It may be something to do with their age, Bob is only 21 months old, maybe as they get older they will get a little braver and speak to anyone.

Although with a few of the words he says it's probably for the best that he keeps them to himself!

  4. I have to agree with colette.. it might just be his personality.  Mine does the exact same thing, except when he is REALLY hyper... then he will chatter on and on, but usually only to me.  He also might be calling to you when he cant see you. In the wild they call to each other to keep connected, know where each other are and to make sure the other isnt dead.
