Question:

Why does my Baby Bearded Dragon run from me?

I just got a new baby Beardie yesterday and he (or she) runs from me when I try to handle him. I've had a beardie as baby before but that was nearly 10 years ago (my last one just recently passed) and I don't remember if this was normal behavior for babies or not. And if so, about how long does it take for babies to come around and become more trusting?

  1. well, since you just got him yesterday, hes not used to you yet.  Being a baby doesn't help much either.  But if you try to hand feed him everyday and hold him once in a while, he will get used to you in about 2 weeks, but that's just a guess.

    Hope it helps

  2. umm its normal you should really leave them to settle i for about a week only going in to change the water. see it from the dragons point of view this animal has been thrown into new surrounding and something that could easily be a threat is trying to grab it. after the week start gently trying to scoop it up (it will probably pee on u if u manage to get it) after a few months it will learn your not a threat and may even start to enjoy being handled

  3. he is just new to you, you might want to handle him more often to get him use to you and your house.

  4. Baby beardies are naturally jumpier than adults, mine always calmed down around the age of six months or so. If you're sticking your hands in from the top of the tank downward, and not horizontally, they could be triggering their instincts to run. Birds of prey swoop down upon them in the wild in a very similar way. Just give it time, and handle your baby frequently. Give him baths in warm water that doesn't feel either warm or cold to the touch every two or three days in a clean sink or tub. That should get him more used to your handing. The water should only go up to your beardies shoulders. He will eventually start to enjoy the bathes.

    I hope this helped! :)

  5. normal behavior by far. I don't even know how many little ones I have right now and most will either run away or will not actively climb onto my hand but once i pick them up, they never want to let go. The ones that are just born like to be held less than the month old ones. Just be patient. Bearded dragons can have different personalities.
