Question:

Why does my Budgie do this?

My Avian vet is not in right now and my budgie keeps on extending his neck and opening his beak as if he is trying to regurgitate! He will eat but then he will do this. I offer him water and it goes away but will come back in an hour or so.

He still eats and drinks normally and does his singing. So should I take him to see another avian vet?

He is about 11 months old.

Please help! Kiwi (my budgie) is my first pet and sadly my other one Jasper died. Could the extended neck and beak opening be related to Jasper's death? (Jasper died about a month ago.....)

  1. Your budgie is just yawning! So you don't need to worry :) They usually yawn when they get sleepy before their nap or before bed time. It's normal to see his budgie beak open up wide, his neck stretch, and his eyes close.

Sometimes a budgie needs to yawn to get something loose, similar to when you need to yawn to pop your ears. You'll see him yawn repeatedly and stretch his neck out a lot. So it's completely natural!

  2. Are you certain he isn't just yawning? Parrots can get very "in to" yawning at times... extending their neck and kind of bobbing/swaying their head, beak wide open and eyes half shut.

  3. sounds like hes just yawning

  4. this is normal

he is either yawning or digesting his food [which might take a bit]
