Question:

Why does my Budgie keep his head low and his wings high?

He stops as soon as I take him out of his cage. The cage door is open right now, and he's not coming out. Just looking out. He's on a perch directly in front of the cage door.

Is something wrong with his back? May he be injured?

I just got him four days ago. Please help!

Oh and, he stops doing that as soon as I approach him.

  1. hes showing off he or he may want another of his kind hes just expressing himself so youll look at him

  2. Sometimes budgies spread their wings away from their bodies to show that they are happy. It is a sign they use.

Also, sometimes it can mean that they are hot and they just are cooling off. If the area where you keep them is hot, try moving them to another location where it is cooler.

  3. It sounds like he is not comfortable with something. it would be good to take him to the vet - even if he is healthy it's a peace of mind...

Make sure it's not in the direct sunlight - it may be overheating. It stops doing that when you approach because birds try not to show that they are feeling bad and also it is alert waiting to see what you will do next...

Let it come out of the cage - the exercise will do him good and he will be able to escape the heat if that is what's bothering him. Also make sure he has fresh food and water and that he regularly gets vitamin rich food. It's not the best thing to add vitamins to the water - it may lead to bacterial growth which is not good for the bird. The best thing is fresh fruit and vegetables (no avocado!) and there are many pelleted foods in the store that contain vitamin supplements...

Also don't forget to let him bathe - you can get a bird bath in any pet store that attaches to the cage...
