Why does my Comcast DVR go green sometimes when switching from one input device to another?

I have a Motorola HD DVR from Comcast, along with a Samsung HD LCD TV. Sometimes, when I'm switching between input devices (i.e. switching from cable to DVD recorder to my Playstation 3), my TV screen goes green. When it happens, the only thing that fixes it is unplugging the DVR from the wall and then plugging it back in.

I have tried exchanging my stupid DVR box (very cheaply made) 3 times, but each and every model Comcast gives me does it. Does anyone know why this happens and if I can avoid it?

  1. Since the issue keeps occuring even after you have the DVR replaced, it's most likely has something to do with the connections you are using. I'm guessing HDMI. If this is the case, try switching to composite cables and see if this fixes your issue.  


  2. It sounds like you getting the green screen when your DVR is looking for an input signal. If the same thing is happening 3 times in a row, then something is wrong. I hope that you do not replace the box with a new one and hook it up the same way the last one that went bad was hooked up. You might want to replace the cables for the DVR. Your DVR might be over heating if it is in the same spot every single time they go bad. The most common problem I found at people homes was that they had the DVRs in enclosed entertainment systems, Yes people still use them. If there is anything on top of a DVR they could overheat. If people use entertainment systems I tell them to take the backs off of them so the air can flow around the DVR. Do you have the DVR on a surge protector? If it gets spike or surge that could cook the circuits in it also. Has Comcast sent a tech out to look at it? I have also gone to sites and have everything working but before I get to the shop they already have had them quit working right. Even high humidity can mess up a hard drive on a DVR.

    I would start with the surge protector and make sure there is a lot of air flow in and around the DVR. I would also replace the connecting cables. As a last resort I would try and get a better one and make sure it has a good extended Warranty. I hope this helps, Good Luck!!!
